Brinda Manickavasagan-Parthasarathy Swamy Sabha-25.12.10- Vinayaga Vignanasaka

Ms.Brinda Manickavasagan, accompanied by Shri S.V.Sudharshan on the Violin and Shri Nellai SriKrishnan on the Mridangam presented a beautiful concert at Parthasarathy Swamy Sabha on 25th December 2010. Brinda was given the 12.30 pm to 2 pm slot. The effortless ease which she sang the alapanas and the kritis showed her talent and definitely she is an emerging talent and have a bright future. Pity that a vast majority of the crowd were busy chasing for seats to have lunch instead of chasing for the musical chair . Brinda was unruffled by the attitude and went on cheerfully to showcase her skills. The Violinist Sudharshan gave a brilliant support both during the alapanas and swarams. Srikrishnan excelled during the thaniavarthanam.

Brinda signed off with Vangakadal kadaindha Madhavanai Kesavanai.

Sriranjani Santhanagopalan - 25.12.10- Parthasarathy Swami Sabha- Varnam -Eeraa napai yinta cauka

A beautiful Thodi varnam composed by Shri Patnam Subramania Iyer

Sriranjani Santhanagopalan ( SSG ) daughter of Shri NSG presented a 2 hour concert accompanied by :

Kumari Akkarai Swarnalatha – Violin
Shri H.N.Sudheendra – Mridangam
Shri Venkataramanan – Kanjira

SSG was given the 2-4 pm slot . The audience, fresh from a sumptuous lunch were treated to some sweet music .

A typical NSGish like beginning with a virutham on Lord Ganesha …Avyaaja Karuna Murthim .. and the Patnam Subramania Iyer Varnam Ee Raana pai was the starter ….

Muthaiah Bhagavathar’s Ganapathe Suguna nidhe on Janaranjani was the next

The third kriti…. Naa mana vini vinavaiyya Nagaraja Sayana…… Lyricist ( Garbhapurivasar ) A 7 minute alapana preceded the kriti ….. Neraval at Kamaneeya mridubaasha….

The next was a beautiful virutham of Kavichakravarthy Kambar …..Nanmayum Selvamum Naalum Nalgumey ..thinmayum Paabamum Sidhaindhu Theyumey… in Hindolam and swiftly moved to Ramanukku mannan mudi ( Shri Arunachala Kavi’s famous song ).

The kriti of the afternoon was Nidhi Chala Sukhama…. A nice 10 minute alapana for which Swarnalatha responded with delicate 8 minute violin play.. the 14 minute Kriti was sung at slow speed ..the neraval and swarams lasted around 10 minutes… Neraval was at Mamata bandhana… Sudheendra presented a good thani for 9 minutes…. However, I felt that Venkatramanan’s could have contributed more….even during the neraval and swarams, it was Sudheendra who had to step in and take control ……

A bhakti bhavam oriented virutham was sung on Shri Manikka Vasagar …. Paal ninaindhootum ..thaayinum saalaparindhu… SSG took off with Kamboji … to Shanmugapriya and finally to Behag and sung Irakkam varaamal ponadhenna en swami ( Gopalakrishna Barathi’s ).. I would say the second best song of the day was this one. SSG appeared deeply involved with the song. It seems Behag dominates most of the concerts at the post main or thukkada section..

The concert ended with Krishna Naama rasana…

Swarnalatha gave a good accompaniment especially during main kriti and Behag…..

Nice to hear many viruthams …….Wish someone presents more on Kambar’s works………

Sriranjani strengths are clear diction, smooth voice and swaras ………

A worthy daughter ......NSG should feel proud ..... SSG along with Gokul will be the torchbearers of NSG traditio

Carnatic music exponent regales city

Vashi: Navi Mumbaikars listened with rapt attention to the rendition of Carnatic music by Padmashri awardee Sudha Raghunathan at Vishnudas Bhave auditorium in Vashi recently. Internationally known for propagating and promoting Carnatic classical form originating from South, Raghunathan got an appreciative audience who maintained pin-drop silence all through the concert, organised by Navi Mumbai Tamil Sangam (NMTS), in collaboration with Micro Technologies.

It was an annual feature of NMTS, a socio-cultural wing of Tamilians in the city that works for promotion of the centuries-old Indian tradition by arranging cultural activities with pure Indian style. Raghunathan started off the much-awaited concert with alaap and moved on to other raagas and collections from Sant Tyagaraj among others. Her unique rendition in Carnatic format, with well synchronised beats of accompanying instruments like violin, mridangam and morsing, was well appreciated.

The solo instrumental session was the highlight of the show where each instrumentalist had his own groove. A huge round of applause greeting awaited them after they were through with performing their segments. A standing ovation in the end for Raghunathan and her troupe including B V Raghavendrarao on violin, Skanda Subramanian on mridangam, and R Raman.

Talking to TNM after the show, Sudha reveals, "The response has been tremendous. Navi Mumbaikars showed that they love Carnatic music. TV channels are also promoting classical music with their 24x7 telecast and this is a good sign for Indian classical music."

Sudha, a disciple of the late M L Vasanthakumari, is a renowned Carnatic music practitioner and has enthralled aficionados across the world for years. She started off her training at the age of nine under the tutelage of her mother Choodamani and switched over to train under Padmabhushan Sangeetha Kalanidhi, Dr M L Vasanthakumari in 1977.

She was on India government's scholarship stint given to young artiste for training. "I chanced upon to render vocal support to my guru for over a decade, a memorable regime of my life. I got the Kalaimamani award from Tamil Nadu government in 1993 and went on to receive a Padmashri in 2004.

My hard work and dedication to Carnatic have been recognised on time. I had the rare honour of singing Vande Mataram in the Parliament in 2000 to mark the completion of 50 years of Indian Republic," said soft spoken and ever-smiling Sudha.

"This is one of our cultural activities in the series throughout the year to preserve and promote our rich culture and tradition through this classical musical form,” she says. “We conduct language classes for free in Marathi and Tamil at our centre," said N Mahadevan, president of Tamil Sangam.

NMTS, in association with Micro Technologies, hosted a Carnatic musical concert by Raghunathan on the occasion. The vocalist was accompanied by BV Ragavendrarao (violin), S Skanda Subramanian (Mridangam) and R Raman (morsing).

Raghunathan rendered more than 10 ragas. She started with Hamsa Dhwani Varnam and the song was Jalajakshi. The main song during the programme was Jagdishwari Krippai Puri (Raga Mohanam), Mahalakshmi Raghunath of NMTS said.

The most prominent part is that the entry to the public was completely free of cost. NMTS President N Mahadevan said, "It is very nice of Sudha Raghunathan who is one of the biggest stars in Carnatic music and internationally renowned to come to Navi Mumbai especially for this music concert. The programme was conducted only through corporate sponsorships, thanks to which music afficianados in the city could witness the performance."

Raghunathan has the exceptional honour of being the first Indian and the only Asian to have performed at the international festival - Echternach in Luxembourg. Sudha inherited an interest in music from her mother Choodamani, who gave her formal training right from the age of nine. She also had the unique honour of rendering Vande Mataram at the Parliament House in the year 2000. "It's a honour to have hosted Ms Raghunathan," said Dr. Sekhar of Micro Technologies.

Concerts of Padma Ganapathy , Suguna Purushothaman and Suguna Varadachary at Mulund Fine Arts - October 2010

Devotion and dedication were the underlying components of the two music concerts hosted by Mulund Fine Arts Society on October 10 at the Bhakta Sangham Temple Complex Hall, Mulund West. The morning vocal rendition by Padma Ganapati of Thane had a strong devotional flavour. Senior disciple of Chellamani Bhagavathar and Alamelu
Mani, illustrious parents of playback and ghazal singer Hariharan, Padma Ganapati exhibits quality training and adherence to the intricacies of the art form. She also heads a classical music institute at Thane, where many children benefit by the learning. She is a spiritual guru to many devotees and a guiding force for many followers, for whom she is the revered Amma.

The well attended concert had highlights like Meenakshi Memudam in Poorvikalyani and Tyagaraja Kriti in Navarasa Kanada. “What is music without bhakti?” the question raised by many composers was answered. The evening concert was a duet Carnatic Vocal by Suguna Purushottoman and Suguna Varadarchary, both senior singers from Chennai. Extreme thoroughness and melodic refinement marked the entire concert.

“Though we are not regular duet singers, each of us travel to different concert destinations throughout the year performing in different sabhas, we do accept special requests for duet concerts, as we are disciples of the same guru Musiri Subramaniam Iyer,” informs Suguna Purushottaman.

“Both of us share the same methodology and do not change a single sangathi of our teacher. There is an underlying understanding when it comes to singing and though we sit together for only one session or so before the concert we are able to present a well knit concert,” says Suguna Varadachari.

“We both started singing along with Mani Krishnaswami for our guru’s centenary celebrations and later on many sabhas started asking both of us to sing together. In the manodharma sections and raga alapana, we use our originality but in the singing of the composition, we sing exactly as taught by our guru,” adds Purushottaman.

The opening Ragamalika Varnam, composed by Suguna Purushottaman, had ganaragams and dvitiya ganaragams like Nattai in the Pallavi and Gowlai in Anupallavi, Varali in the Mukhtayee Swaram, Sriragam, Reeti Gowlai, Narayana Gowlai, Kedaram and Bowli in the Charanam.

Song on Saradadevi composed by Ramaswamy Sivan followed next.“I very much enjoyed the rare composition Paruvam Parkka Nyayama in Dhanyasi. The emotional rendering was very pleasing to the ear,” says Hemalata Veeramani, principal of the MFAS Music School, senior disciple of Suguna Purushottaman.

The rest of the concert had O Jagadamba in Anandabhairavi by Shyama Sastri, Muthuswami Dikshitar’s Neerajakshi in Hindolam and Devi Jagat Janani in Shankarabaranam chosen to commemorate Navaratri. The end piece composed by Suguna Purushottaman, Mahadeva Manohari had a series of ragas, Devamanohari, Jayamanohari, Saraswatimanohari and Ramamanohari.

Their shared approach combined both substance and style and had a consistently dignified delineation. There was nothing that looked rehearsed but they sang in perfect unison. The concert was a synchronized meeting of two maestros, exhibiting their parampara of pedigree training and consummate command over the classical medium.

The violin by R Madhavan from Mulund had exceptional nicety and comfort and the mridangam support by Rajesh Sreenivasan was impeccable with a short and sweet tani avartanam, adding to a meritorious performance.

“Being Navaratri it is very apt that the sabha hosted concerts of three women and both concerts were well attended with the audience enjoying every bit of the singing,” says Savita Balasubramaniam, herself a senior singer from Mulund.

Review by Bhanu Kumar in Mulund-Powai Plus

A review of Smt Padma Ganapathy's concert by Sujatha Subaraman :

Navratri, is the time when devotional programmes are held at various venues. On Sunday, 10.10.10, Bhakta Sangham in Mulund (W) was the venue for one such devotional cum classical concert. Held under the banner of Mulund Fine Arts, the performing artiste Padma Ganapathy, a senior citizen from Thane, treated the audience to some of her own compositions.

This senior citizen is a well known music teacher cum performer who has composed over 1200 devotional songs. She received her vocal training from Guru Chellamani and subsequently from Alamelu Mani.

For her dedication and devotion to music she has been conferred with many titles like “Mahdurvani”, Brahmanandamayi and Annapuraneshwari.

In 1991, as a tribute to her Guru she started Chellamani Memorial Academy to provide training in carnatic music both vocal and instrumental.Fondly addressed as Amma by her students, she holds weekly sessions wherein she teaches her own compositions to her students.

On Sunday, music lovers got a taste of her magnetic voice while she rendered bhajans along with some classical music.
